Jen Fagan Simonsen

Growing up, I was always outdoors—building homes for ladybugs, making flower crowns, and exploring the beaches of Ireland for fossils and shells.

My love for nature evolved alongside my passion for creativity, with the natural world offering endless beauty to capture through art and photography.

After earning a Bachelor of Education in Rotterdam, specializing in Early Childhood, I had the opportunity to work across Europe in countries like the Czech Republic, Spain, and Denmark. My experiences taught me the value of outdoor learning, especially during my time at a forest kindergarten in Denmark, where I saw firsthand how Child-Led Outdoor Learning Through Play fostered deep engagement and energy in both children and educators.

The pivotal moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic when I observed the profound difference outdoor learning made in my Early Years class. The slower pace, fresh air, and natural environment recharged not only the children but myself as well. This led me to create educational materials, write an outdoor play curriculum, and even start my own bilingual outdoor daycare.

After transitioning to a leadership role indoors and experiencing burnout, I realised I needed to return to my roots in nature. This journey culminated in the creation of INTO the OUT, where my mission is to inspire and support educators, families, and organisations in embracing outdoor learning through play, even when curriculum demands or corporate goals seem to stand in the way. And I love it!
